Beautiful is the day…

Today is full of memorable moments. A memorable moment with loved ones having an okay-but-not-so-okay meal at Hilton Hotel, where the staff offered each of us a complimentary chocolate cake in conjunction with Hilton’s 100 years anniversary. A memorable moment when I finally built the courage to say “This is it. We are ready!” A memorable moment when I finally got my hands on Scott Schuman’s book at only RM12. Today is indeed beautiful and I will not say in another way.

Islanders yearn for development

[Above picture taken by NSTP/Khairull Azry Bidin] NOTE: Article written during the Sandakan parliamentary by-election coverage ****** A JETTY with a rundown bridge that connects the docking platform and the shore of Kampung Pulau Berhala greets visitors as they arrive at the small forested island near the Sandakan city centre. One can see wooden beams protruding from the eroded cemented walkway. With cracks everywhere, it appears to be a matter of time before the bridge gives way, endangering visitors and locals alike. “Slowly, one at a time,” said one villager as a group of media practitioners treaded carefully on the rickety bridge. Along the walkway are wooden stilt structures used to hold small boats and unfinished houses. According to Kampung Pulau Berhala chief Junior Jikirin, the 100-metre long cemented walkway was built five years ago during the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration, with no maintenance work carried out since. This, he said, is the only jetty for the villagers. There is also another jetty, but it connects to the Joint Task Force base on the far …

Life in BerryTown

The last time I wore temporary tattoos was during high school. Back then, the design was old school with a lot of black ink. It was the traditional American styles of tattoos – skull, dagger, sailor, heart, bird, and anchor among others. Very rock and roll indeed. The other popular design was tribal. I had donned them all. But ask me to wear them now, I will probably only do so for a theme party. As I grow older, my attention to detail and style changes. I learn less is better and simplicity is elegance, especially in my dress sense. When it comes to accessories, I tend to opt for ethereal and dainty jewellery pieces. I go for watches with a simple design but luxurious looking. Nothing over the top and in your face. So, when I stumbled upon BerryTown on Instagram two months ago, I knew instantly I have to get them. Their tattoo designs are absolutely classy, alluring and wanderlusting. A design that speaks my passion. So I browsed through their website, selecting pieces I …

Movies that make you want to see the world

This year, I may or may not travel. But who knows, because based on last year’s adventures I learnt that I was capable of making an impromptu decision. Just like when I decided to purchase return tickets for my then 7-year-old nieces, five days prior to flying to Jakarta … just because I wanted companions and most of all, I wanted to expose them to a backpacking adventure. That was in May 2015 and boy, we had a blast. Then in June, I contemplated joining my mom on a tour group to Beijing but I shrugged off hesitation and four months later, I found myself scaling up the steep stairs of China’s great wall. And three weeks after our Beijing trip, I packed my suitcase and took my mom on a suprise trip to London. You see, most of us have a strong desire to see the world and often, we hesitate. To travel (far or near) is to just do it because if you don’t, you will just be sitting and dreaming about travelling. But I also …
